Restarting Epos ES-14N would mean re-creating the legendary ES-14, a 2-way speaker known for its impressive sound quality and classic design. The ES-14 featured a large, straightforward cabinet meant to be placed on dedicated stands, focusing solely on acoustic performance without any superfluous lifestyle elements.

An in-depth analysis of the original ES-14 reveals its innovative use of a 7" polypropylene woofer with an underhung coil and a substantial magnet. This unique woofer design included multiple layers of voice coil winding, adding mass to achieve a natural roll-off in the response curve. The non-standard woofer size—larger than a 6.5" but smaller than an 8"—was a clever choice, providing the low-frequency drive of an 8" speaker while retaining the midrange clarity of a 6.5". This combination was key to the ES-14's distinctive and highly regarded sound signature.

ES-14N

Sound is fascinating and can be downright addictive

The ES14N are bold and confident sounding, refusing to get flustered even with music as complex as this. Push volume levels and they stay composed. Play quietly and they remain persuasive. Sounding good at low levels is a rare talent, but one that we appreciate. There are always going to be times when you can’t listen to music as loudly as you would like and these Epos don’t penalise you for that.

The resurrection of the once British cult brand is a small speaker sensation: a highly competent all-round speaker who can impress emotionally and with its precision.

Back to the future

Karl-Heinz Fink knows how to deliver excellence. As the new owner of the traditional British brand Epos, he faced the challenge of creating a loudspeaker that was both technically advanced and sonically superior while preserving the brand's heritage. He succeeded with flying colors. The ES-14N has emerged as a pleasantly approachable loudspeaker, offering a high degree of linearity and consistently delivering detailed, precise sound.
